It can be difficult to keep the love alive in a relationship. In fact, it’s a real skill. Luckily it’s never too late to adopt good, loving habits, and it’s a skill anyone can learn. Here are five habits that’ll help you and your partner stay starry-eyed for years to come. Remember: don’t wait for a special occasion to express your love – nurture your relationship by practising these habits every day!

Habit 1: Fight fair

It’s not so much about whether you should or shouldn’t fight, but rather about how you fight. In order to maintain the spark, you actually have to learn how to let the sparks fly! So the next time you sense a storm coming, remember these three key steps: listen, speak honestly and come up with a solution together. And never say ‘I told you so!’

Habit 2: Admire each other

Take some time every day to think about what your partner does that reminds you of why you fell in love with him in the first place. When he does something that makes you happy, even if it’s something small, tell him. Appreciating and respecting each other will help keep the romance alive.

Habit 3: Take on a project together

Even though it’s important to have shared interests, trying out something new together can strengthen your relationship. Why not enter a 5km fun run or sign up for Xhosa lessons? Tackling a new project together will not only bring the two of you closer together, it’ll also help you work on areas of your relationship that you wouldn’t otherwise have explored.

Habit 4: Make the little things count

Never assume that your partner knows you love him – say ‘I love you’ at least once a day. Think of all the things you used to do when you first started dating, like kissing each other hello and goodbye and holding hands when walking. Are you still doing these things? If not, perhaps it’s time to remind your partner that he’s your sweetheart.

Habit 5: Spend quality time together

Try to spend at least 30 minutes a day with your partner – just the two of you – and talk about everything but work, finances or family. Meet each other for lunch or go for a walk after work – whatever works for the two of you. The point is to spend quality time together.
